What are Self-Directed Services?

Our Self-Directed Service is designed to support individuals with developmental disabilities in planning for, finding, and maintaining successful individualized employment in their community. This project provides assistance through:

  • Exploring and defining your strengths, talents, gifts, dreams
  • Development of a person-centered plan using a team approach
  • Training and assistance accessing community and employment resources, such as developing job opportunities, connecting with community members and organizations, developing paid and unpaid long-term supports, and navigating the publicly funded employment system
  • Accessing all available funding to implement the employment plan

Who is involved in Self-Directed Services?
This project gives flexibility and decision-making to the individual and their family, friend, or advocate. Individuals, along with other significant people they have chosen for their team decide:

  • Who to include in the planning process, such as family, friends, community members, paid professionals, etc.
  • How to best connect with community members, community groups, and other resources in the community to meet the goals of the plan
  • How to best spend the allocated money to meet the goals of the plan by making specific decisions on who to hire to assist them in implementing the plan, i.e. local employment specialists, community members, acquaintances or other
  • What actions will be approved and authorized related to the plan

Who qualifies for this project?
You must want individualized employment in the community. In addition, you must be:

  • Eligible for services from the State Division of Developmental Disabilities.
  • 21 years of age or older
  • Willing to commit to the initial planning process and the on-going effort to implement your plan and reach your goals
  • Referred by your DD case manager

What funds can pay for this service?

  • Clallam County DD
  • Private pay
